Why Breast Implant Removal Surgery?
Breast implant removal, also known as breast explant surgery, is a procedure in which breast implants are removed, often along with the surrounding scar tissue (capsule). Patients may consider this procedure for various reasons, including personal preference, changes in comfort, or to address complications associated with their original breast augmentation surgery.
During a consultation, Dr Bish Soliman will discuss your individual circumstances, goals, and any concerns to determine if breast implant removal is appropriate for you. The procedure is tailored to the patient’s unique needs, and outcomes may vary depending on factors such as the condition of the implants and the patient’s overall health.
Considerations with Breast Implant Removal Surgery ?
Breast implant removal surgery may be considered by individuals seeking to address issues associated with a previous breast augmentation, such as complications or dissatisfaction with the aesthetic results. Suitable candidates are generally in good physical health, non-smokers, and have realistic expectations about the procedure.
A consultation with Dr. Bish Soliman is essential to determine your suitability for surgery. During the consultation, your medical history, previous surgeries, and goals for the procedure will be discussed. Based on this information, your surgeon will develop a treatment plan tailored to your individual needs and circumstances.
Common Reasons for Breast Implant Removal Surgery
Breast implant removal surgery is performed for a variety of reasons, depending on the patient’s individual needs and goals. The specific surgical approach will be determined during your consultation to ensure it aligns with your circumstances. Common reasons for considering this procedure include:
- Implant Complications: Issues such as rupture, leaking, or displacement of the implant.
- Capsular Contracture: A condition where the scar tissue around the implant tightens, potentially causing discomfort or changes in breast shape.
- Pain or Discomfort: Breast implants that cause pain or other physical symptoms.
- Change in Preference: Some patients may wish to change the size, shape, or position of their breasts or no longer desire implants.
- Health Concerns: Conditions such as Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) or symptoms associated with Breast Implant Illness (BII).
During your consultation, Dr. Bish Soliman will discuss your individual circumstances, provide information about the procedure, and address any concerns you may have to support informed decision-making.
The Procedure: Breast Implant Removal Surgery
Breast implant removal surgery is performed under general anesthesia in a fully accredited private hospital and typically takes around two hours to complete. During the procedure, your surgeon will make incisions, often in the natural breast crease or along previous incision sites, to minimize additional scarring. The implant is then removed through the incision, and in some cases, the surrounding scar tissue (capsule) may also be removed, which is known as a capsulectomy or en bloc removal.
Patients may choose implant removal alone or combine it with additional procedures, such as implant replacement or a breast lift. For patients replacing their implants, new implants are inserted after the removal of the old ones. In some cases, drains may be temporarily placed to help collect fluid and support healing. Incisions are closed with sutures. Scarring is expected and may vary depending on individual healing factors.
