All surgery has risks and potential complications. If you are obese (BMI body mass index above 30) or you have diabetes, you may be at higher risk of developing surgical complications such as blood clots in the legs or lungs.
Smoking, Vaping and using Nicotine Patches also interfere with post-operative healing and increase the risk of surgery.
Dr Bish will discuss these general risks and others related to your specific procedure, health and medical history.
Possible complications for a surgical procedure can include:
- Complications related to anaesthesia, including pneumonia, blood clots and more rarely, death
- Infection at the incision site, which may result in sub-optimal scarring and require additional surgery.
- Separation of the surgical wound (dehiscence), which sometimes requires additional treatments.
- Fluid buildup under the skin or Seroma which may require re-hospitalisation.
- Mild bleeding, which may require another surgical procedure, or bleeding significant enough to require a transfusion.
- Abnormal scarring due to skin breakdown.
- Numbness and tingling from nerve damage, which may be permanent.
- And many additional risks that are specific to your procedure.
Dr Bish Soliman and his team always take precautions to reduce these risks and reduce the chances of these complications occurring.
How you can reduce your surgical risks and chances of a complications:
- Adopt a healthier lifestyle before, during and after surgery – avoid smoking, drinking and recreational drugs.
- Please follow your pre-op and post-op instructions closely.
- Please let the clinic know of ANY changes to your health or medical condition prior to or after the procedure.
